Stamped Overlay Driveways

A full decorative overlay stamped and coloured over your existing driveway — brick, slate, ashlar, or cobble, with borders and medallions.

What it is

A stamped overlay turns plain grey concrete into a patterned, coloured surface without tearing anything out. We grind the existing slab, bond a cementitious overlay to it, stamp the pattern into the wet material by hand, then build the colour in layers and seal it. The result reads as brick, slate, ashlar, or cut stone, and it is bonded to the driveway you already have.

Because the overlay goes over your existing slab, the job is a fraction of the cost and disruption of a demolition and re-pour, and there is no permit-and-truck circus in your driveway for a week. What matters is the preparation: an overlay is only as good as the bond underneath it, so every job starts with a mechanical grind, not a pressure wash.

Borders are where a driveway stops looking like a resurfacing job and starts looking designed. A single, double, or twisted border in a contrasting colour frames the drive and ties it to the walkway and entry. A hand-set centrepiece medallion — a compass rose, a star, a monogram — turns the whole approach into the feature of the front elevation.

Where it's best

  • Tired, stained, or plain grey driveways that are structurally sound
  • Matching a driveway, walkway, and entry into one continuous design
  • Homeowners who want a stone or brick look without pavers settling and weeding
  • Curb appeal ahead of a sale or after a re-roof or repaint

How we install it

Stamped Overlay Driveways goes down in four stages, always in this order, and each one gets the cure time the manufacturer specifies rather than the time a schedule would prefer. Compressing or skipping a stage is the single most common reason a coating fails early, so the sequence below is the job — not a summary of it.

  1. Grind and assess

The slab is diamond-ground to remove sealers, stains, and laitance, and to open a profile the overlay can key into. Cracks and spalls are cut out and repaired first — an overlay does not hide a moving crack, so it gets treated properly.

  2. Bond coat and overlay

A bonding primer goes down, then the cementitious overlay is placed at stamping thickness and worked flat and consistent across the whole drive.

  3. Stamp and detail

The pattern is stamped into the material by hand while it is open, then borders are cut and taped and any centrepiece is laid out and set.

  4. Colour and seal

Base colour, accent, and antiquing are built in layers so the surface has depth rather than looking painted, then the whole driveway is sealed.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to tear out my existing driveway?
No. A stamped overlay bonds to the slab you already have, which is why it costs a fraction of demolition and re-pour and takes days rather than weeks. We only recommend replacement when the slab is structurally failing — heaving, sinking, or broken through — and we will tell you plainly if that is what we find.
Will it crack where the old driveway is cracked?
Existing cracks are cut out and repaired before any overlay goes down, and control joints are honoured through the new surface. A crack that is still moving because of a soil or drainage problem will eventually telegraph through any surface treatment — we will point that out at the quote rather than after.
How long before I can park on it?
Foot traffic is typically the day after sealing and vehicles a few days later, depending on temperature and humidity. We give you the exact schedule for your driveway and we do not compress it to finish early.
Can you match my pool deck or walkway?
Yes, if we install both. We do not attempt to match a texture or colour someone else laid, or a new slab we did not pour — the result never quite lines up. In that situation we will quote resurfacing the whole area instead so it genuinely matches.
